What are the best camera apps for iPhone?

We’ve been testing the iPhone 4s for our favourite camera apps. Below are the three that made the cut. The criteria was: high quality, easy to use camera apps that gave great options to spice up your pics with little effort. The idea is not to have to go into an editing suite and do all the hard work, but to make it look as if you have. Here are the three we picked for you:

Hipstamatic

  • Best for: The look and feel of taking pics from an old school camera
  • You get to: Choose different lens, film and flash combos
  • Very cool: The names of the lenses
  • Not so cool: Trying to get you to shop for more lenses, film and flash options
  • Find it here: hipstamatic.com
  • Cost: $2 so about R12 from your itunes account linked to SA credit card

The name is a little segregational, but I suppose it does appeal to the hipsters plenty. The idea is to take pics from a camera that has a real old school look and feel, right down to choice of casement options. Simply scroll between three old lenses and make your choice, then do the same for the flash and film. The picture you take will reflect your choice with no need for any altering (unless you decide to).

If you get fed-up experimenting with going through all the options, you can put the app on random. Now give the phone a shake, once up-and-down will do, and the app will match up a random lens/flash/film combo to produce an image you’ll be showing off as if you were inspired by some inner channeling of Dali or Marylin Munro

Before Hipstamatic

Duck turned Hipster

After a month: Still dig showing it off to others, but don’t use it as much as I did to start with. Most likely to: keep it for a few more months.

Instagram

  • Best for: Sharing photos
  • You get to: Put an effect on, then share on social media platforms
  • Very cool: massive community so endless pics to see
  • Not so cool: too big on the picture sharing, not enough on picture taking
  • Find it here: instagr.am    (that’s a very cool app url right there)
  • Cost: no charge

This  monster app should be an inspiration to all those dreaming of the app they want to create. Instagram sold for $1 Billion to Facebook in April. The reason for this was the huge number of people that subscribed to Instagram. That’s what it is essentially, with the massive numbers, Instagram became a social networking platform … a very large on which resulted in the equally large sum it was bought for.

The functionality works incredibly well. Take photo, add effect, share. It’s just not as exciting nor does it provide as many options that something like camera+ does. Instagram will probably remain the go-to app for most, because of its strong word of mouth factor. Our words do not encourage you to go here first though.

Before Instagram – our brave duck perching on a bottle

Post Instagram – now available to their community of 50 Million users

After a month: Not using it to take pictures and finding it difficult to be inspired by the communities pics. Most likely to: remain one of the 50 million lemmings who has the app, but not to use it much

Camera+

  • Best for: massive variety and very easy to use post production
  • You get to: easily apply incredible effects and borders
  • Very cool: burst and timer modes
  • Not so cool: sneaky extra payment options
  • Find it here: campl.us (and again! Another brilliant url. These apps dudes are on the ball)
  • Cost: 99c which is less than R10

We found ourselves using Camera+ more than any of the other apps due to its very easy to operate, large range of options. For self portraits a timer works brilliantly along with its neighbour in the modes setting – the burst. Simply keep finger down and it keeps snapping, way faster than we thought it would be, but with a little less quality, especially in low light.

For more specific focus and exposure there is a two finger function to set exposure separately while focusing. Once you have taken your shot, all images are automatically moved to a light box to then apply the effects.

There is a short cut though. You might never need to go any further than the best function on any iphone photo app: the Clarity button from Camera+. Simply incredible. This is the best piece of photo app advice you can get. Ours came from photog extraordinaire Craig Kolesky who told it straight my bru: “download camera+ and find the Clarity button GO!”

Before camera+

Post camera+

After a month: Looking for things to shoot. Most likely to: keep this one till something better comes out

Now, because you have been so patient and are still here, we have decided to show you and extra app that is just too much fun not to share. We advise not sharing it though, but to rather use the results to show off your apparent skills of photography thanks to the awesome 8-megapixel iSight camera specs of the iPhone 4s and the cartoon application- Paper Camera

Paper Camera

As the app description says: “Real time cartoon and painting effects …” Yes the effect is as good as you can imagine. Duck shows it off best:

There are another 10 options or so which are just as effective and easy to use as the above coolness.

When you purchase an IPhone, built-in apps are installed in the phone and are ready to use. To think of it, built-in apps for IPhones should already satisfy us, but humans as we are, we tend to seek for more and more. We do not get contented with the available stuffs presented. Thanks to the online apps store for the available downloadable apps for sale and for free. With the IPhone apps store, you can select numerous apps which you would like to incorporate in your IPhone. Mobile software, apps, games, ringtones, themes, wallpapers, videos, e-books and many more are all available in the IPhone apps store.

There are several ways on how to download these apps to your IPhone. New IPhone users need not to worry on how to download these apps because it is very easy. Just follow the instructions below and I am sure you will be just right on track:

apple-app-store

Instructions

1. Create an account on the app Store website before you can download any apps. From there, instructions will be given through the process.

2. After you have created an account, you will need to log in. you will then be required to fill out a payment form, even if you only plan on downloading free apps, you will still be required to fill up this form. After you are done with this process, you should have a user name (it can be your email add) and a password that you will need to download the apps.

3. Press on the App store button from your IPhone and scroll to find the app you want to install. For free apps download, select “top 25” then select “free” apps.

4. Select the app you want and press on the “free” button (if the app is free), it will then change the “free” to “install”. Click again to install. The next part is that, you will be required to enter your username and your password. Once you already have entered your user name, your phone will automatically remember your username the next time you enter the site, but your password will always be required so as to prevent anyone from downloading apps to your phone without your permission.

5. Once your IPhone has started downloading the app, a time bar will appear, indicating the time it will take to finish the downloading process. Once it is completed, sit back and relax, and be ready to experience your IPhone’s new app.

Another way of downloading apps to your IPhone is basically the same with the instructions given above, but this time, you will use your PC for downloading the apps. After you have downloaded the app in your PC, you will then send this app from your PC to your IPhone via Bluetooth device or other devices that are capable of transmitting files from one device to another.

So what are you waiting for, download the latest apps for your IPhone now and experience the world of comfort in your hands.
